It’s not as easy as it looks, so make sure
you’re prepared for a difficult climb.
Know the 3 rule for
mountaineers:
It's always further than it looks.
It's always taller than it looks.
And it's always harder than it looks
•
Decide which trail you want to take. This will
determine the days you need to reach the summit and the descent. There are
around 5 trails to Mt. Apo with varying degrees of difficulty and accessibility.
The more popular are the Kapatagan-Kidapawan trail and the Kidapawan-Magpet
trail.
Consider a day extra in case of emergencies. This is a reminder especially for those coming from other areas when booking their flight.
•
For your own safety, make sure to register with
local officials before climbing.
•
It’s best to have a porter-guide that you really
know. Or
you can also hire a porter registered with the association. They will help
you to carry your stuff and your garbage (littering in the mountain is not
allowed). A porter can also help you take photos and prepare your food. But
always remember, climbing Mt. Apo (or any mountain) is not a walk in the park.
Treat your porter-guides with RESPECT!
·
Bring headlamps, lighter and first aid kit
(betadine, band- aid and medicines like Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, Loperamide and
Midol).
• Bag your things in cellophanes. Waterproofing of your things is essential. A condom can be also used as waterproof casing for cellphones.
• Do not forget to bring a raincoat or poncho since it tends to rain a lot once you’re near the top.Or you can bring extra large cellophane that you can also use as cover for the rain.
·
For women, bring pantyliners or napkin. High
altitude and temperature might cause you to have your period earlier than your
cycle.
•
Bring extra socks to protect your feet from
crossing mossy swamps and rivers. Bring extra footwear also especially for
river crossings. Bring also gloves to protect your dainty fingers. :)
•
Bring wet tissue. No time for taking a bath.
This will be very helpful for hygienic purposes.
•
Be aware of your physical limitations. Do not
climb or hike too fast simply because you want to reach the top ahead of
others.
·
Most importantly, bring Positive Attitude.
Hope this helps. :)
